Volcanology and Igneous Petrology

My research interests lie where volcanology and igneous petrology mingle and mix. In the field, I examine and sample tephra and lava sequences to reconstruct the eruptive histories of volcanoes. In the lab, I analyze the chemical composition of volcanic rocks and their constituents (volcanic glass, minerals and their inclusions) to decipher the dynamics of magma reservoir and eruption processes, such as magma differentiation, mixing and degassing, and the environmental consequences of volcanic eruptions.

I believe that the best way to learn is to be placed in a situation where you have the freedom to experiment for yourself. Thus, as a teacher or supervisor, my role is to bring the student in that situation, guiding him/her along the way, and to create an environment where resources are accessible, and standards are high, yet achievable. I try to deliver frequent feedback. When mentoring students conducting research projects, I typically provide a starting “framework”, while encouraging the students to explore any avenue that interests them. More often than not, this leads to interesting findings. Of course, this approach is very flexible and is adjusted based on the needs and personality of each student.
In my classes, I favor interactive lectures coupled with frequent team lab work to put the student in the center of the learning process. People learn well collectively, and collaboration is a key skill for future success. I’m also very much interested in the use of emerging technologies in teaching and learning.
Whenever possible, I run field trips associated with topics covered in class, so that the students have the complete hands-on-the-outcrop experience.
